Leaning utility pole leads to road closure, traffic

Waipio Point Access Road was closed from around 5:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. today due to a leaning utility pole. Waipio Point Access Road serves as a main entrance to Waipahu High School, so many students, faculty, and staff members were stuck in traffic.

Like many teachers, Kaitlyn Yee, a ninth grade science teacher, was stuck in traffic for an hour and ten minutes, missing half of her first period of the day. Students were held in the cafeteria if their teachers or substitutes arrived late.

Many students had to walk to school as an alternative to being dropped off on campus. As a result, numerous students were also late to their first period of the day. Hawaiian Electric Company, Hawaiian Telecom, and Spectrum worked to replace the pole and reconnect their lines throughout the school day.
