On Friday, February 9, 2024 Waipahu High School held their annual Safety Fair, where clubs sell food, drinks, and snacks as fundraisers. The school day changes from a normal Friday schedule to an A-schedule, shortening the classes and allowing for an hour-long fair!
According to some of The Cane Tassel members, the things they enjoyed were the food options, the classes ending earlier, and the fact that they were able to support their friends’ clubs. A couple of students even liked seeing everyone outside and socializing with each other.
There were a few things that students did not like, such as navigating through the large crowds, waiting in the long lines, and how hot it was. One The Cane Tassel member mentioned how overwhelming it was, especially for APPS students since their field day was also on Friday.
Some suggestions to improve the Safety Fair is to space out the booths more and have line management from the clubs. Lots of students also wanted more savory food options like bento boxes, burritos, Raising Canes, and Taco Bell because almost all the food offered were sweets or snacks.
I tried the churros from Student Government, Ju-mui from the Class of 2025, horchata from Class of 2024, and spicy ahi poke nachos from Math Team. In my opinion, the best thing I had were the churros from SG because there was over a foot of churro for 3 dollars.
In short, other than the bustling crowds and hot weather, the safety fair was relatively enjoyed by the students. It was nice having shorter classes and more time to spend with friends. If they opened up the school a little more, I think that it would help with the crowding because students would have more places to wait. What did you think of this year’s Safety Fair?
